WHO IS UKWU JOSHUA MBA?
I am an African/Jazz Pianist, Composer, and Arranger from Abia state, South-East Nigeria. Born and bred in Nigeria.
I started my musical journey when I was 8 years. First introduced to the piano by my father (Mba Ukwu Mba), who was learning to play the piano at the time. Although my dad gave up playing the piano, I had already taken interest in the instrument. At this time, I only played a few melodies within the home, which were completely self-taught. Therefore, I was Just a musician domestically.
EDUCATION: I am a graduate of Peter king College of Music where I studied Piano Performance. Forthwith, I was retained to teach in the college, where I taught for 3 years after my graduation in 2017. Thereafter, I applied to Muson School of Music where I am currently studying Western Classical Music and Jazz. I hold a Certificate of Music Performance from PKCM (2017), the Musical Society of Nigeria (grade 7 theory) and various grades of certification in music theory (Up to grade 6) and piano practical (up to grade 5) from the Associated Board of Royal School of Music (ABRSM), London.
WORK AND EXPERIENCE: As a pianist, I have performed as solo pianist and in seasoned jazz bands. I have performed on several platforms across states in Nigeria, including the Lagos International Jazz Festival (2016), where I performed with a Nigerian veteran jazz saxophonist and composer, Herbert Kunle Ajayi. My musical experiences have been much influenced by the Jazz and African sound. My compositions and arrangements are acclaimed to have so much feel of African culture. My compositions and arrangements include: Nzoputa (by Ukwu Joshua Mba), Olorun Agbaye (by Ukwu Joshua Mba and Abata Samuel), Oluwa ku ise (Yoruba folk song; Dapo Dina’s arrangement was adopted), In Christ alone (Stuart Townend and Keith Getty), My Favourite Things (Richard Rodgers), and Watermelon Man (Herbie Hancock), Ojuelegba Afro-Cuban arrangement (By Wizkid). I have also performed two recitals, where I played works of J.S Bach, L.V. Beethoven, Isaac Albeniz, Claude Debussy, Frank Churchill, Harold Arlen and Herbie Hancock.
THE CAUSE: I have been admitted into the American School of Modern Music, Paris, France to study for a degree in Jazz Performance.
I need your support for me to be able to raise a tuition fee and miscellaneous of $7,000 towards the fall semester. A dollar will definitely go a long way towards fulfilling dreams.
Thank you!
